Fireplace and chimney service in Longmont

Half of Longmont was built after 1990, and its oldest blocks date to the 1870s. We service both kinds of fireplace, starting with a free inspection.

Longmont was founded in 1871 by settlers from Chicago, as the Chicago-Colorado Colony, and its two National Register districts, the Eastside and the Westside, hold the old houses that grew around Main Street. Most of the city is far newer. The Census Bureau's 2024 survey puts the median Longmont home at 1991, with about 52 percent built in 1990 or later and under 5 percent before 1940. Gas heats about 75 percent of homes, one of the higher shares in Boulder County.

So most Longmont fireplaces are gas, many in factory-built units with a metal chimney inside a framed chase. Those need a yearly service, a high-altitude setup and a sound chase cover. In the Eastside and Westside districts it is brick chimneys more than a century old. At the free inspection we check the fireplace and chimney from the roof and from inside, take photos and write down the price of anything that needs work before anything is done.

Newer Longmont: gas fireplaces and chase covers

Gas appliances usually lose about 4 percent of their input for every 1,000 feet above 2,000 feet. At Longmont's roughly 4,980 feet that works out to about 12 percent. A gas fireplace that isn't set up for it can burn with a yellow, sooty flame. A yearly service typically runs $150 to $350, and a pilot, thermocouple or igniter repair $100 to $350.

On the roof, the chase cover is what hail hits. Once dented, it holds water and rusts, and the rust streaks down the siding. A new chase cover typically runs $300 to $700 and a cap $250 to $850. We photograph hail damage for your insurance adjuster.

The Eastside and Westside districts

The city says Longmont has two National Register districts and no locally designated ones. The Eastside district runs roughly from Fourth to Eighth avenues between Kimbark and Atwood streets, and the Westside from Third to Fifth avenues between Terry and Grant. The National Park Service record for the Eastside counts houses built mostly from 1871 to 1930, nearly half of them before 1900.

Chimneys that old tend to need repointing, typically $500 to $2,500, a new crown at $600 to $2,200, or a liner, $1,500 to $5,000, where the clay is cracked or missing. We match the old brick and mortar.

FAQ

Longmont chimney questions

Do Longmont's no-burn days apply to my gas fireplace?

No. Gas fireplaces are not restricted on winter Action Days. The restriction covers wood fireplaces and stoves that aren't approved, in Boulder County below 7,000 feet. If your home is in the part of Longmont that lies in Weld County, check the state's map.

My gas fireplace clicks but won't light. What's wrong?

Often a worn igniter or thermocouple, a dirty pilot or a valve problem. A pilot, thermocouple or igniter repair typically runs $100 to $350 and a valve or control board $300 to $1,000. We find the cause and price it at the free inspection.

Is a chimney inspection required when I sell my Longmont house?

No state law requires one, but Colorado does require a carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of every bedroom when a home with a fireplace or gas appliance is sold. Many buyers ask for an inspection, and ours is free.

How much does a chimney cleaning cost in Longmont?

We price the cleaning at the free inspection, once we've seen the flue. You get the price in writing before we start. We book Sunday to Friday in 3-hour windows and call to confirm.
